Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine protects about 49,000 acres of granite-domed mountains, spruce–fir forests, lakes, ponds, and rugged Atlantic shoreline spread across Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, and smaller islands. Centered around Bar Harbor, it features Cadillac Mountain—the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast—along with glacially carved valleys, rocky headlands, and cobble beaches that showcase the area’s dramatic coastal geology. Established in 1916 as the first national park east of the Mississippi, Acadia also preserves a historic system of 45 miles of carriage roads, financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr., that blend cultural history with natural beauty. More than four million visitors a year come to hike over 130 miles of trails, bike the carriage roads, drive the Park Loop Road, and watch sunrise or crashing surf along the park’s iconic pink-granite shores

General Travel Guides

Acadia NP The Complete Guide

Covers lots of activities in the park - hiking, kayaking, boat cruises, and biking.  Covers mostly the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island areas.  While there are some recommendations for dining and lodging, this guide is more focused on activities, history, and ecology of the area.

Hiking Guides and Maps

Acadia NP Day Hikes

Eighteen day hikes with routes highlighted on a map, which makes route finding easy in a park with many criss-crossing trails.  Fourteen of the hikes are on Desert Island, with a couple on the Schoodic peninsula and Isle au Haut.  None of the hikes are much longeqr than six miles with many shorter hikes.  Some are easy, but a number of them are rated strenuous due to steep climbs.

Nature Guides and Natural History

Acadia NP Wildlife

This weatherproof, pamphlet-style guide is great to throw in the pack to help answer those questions while hiking.  Five and a half panels of birds, a section on marine mammals, and a couple of panels of mollusks and other shore life.

The Story of Acadia National Park

How did Acadia National Park come about?  This book tells the story through the memoir and letters of the park's greatest proponent, George Dorr.
