Other Parks and Monuments of the Southeast and Atlantic

AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS,  NC, PR, SC, TN, VI

From Arkansas to the Atlantic, there are a number of National Parks and Monuments across the Southeast and Caribbean

Biscayne Bay National Park

Book Cover Florida National Parks

Florida National Parks and Reserves Travel Guide

This book covers six areas in the state of Florida - the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, Dry Tortugas, two preserves, and a national forest. The book is different from most guides, as the writing is very close to bullet points. While different, it is very helpful with information.  The guide covers how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and sample itineraries.

Images of Modern America Biscayne National Park

Before designation as a National Monument (and later a National Park), Biscayne Bay had a long history of human habitation. This book covers the history from pre-colonial times through what was essentially an ungoverned area to today. Lots of pictures dating back to the mid to late 1800s.   Lots of history behind the conservation movement that led to the park as we know it today.

Everglades National Park

Book Cover Florida National Parks

Florida National Parks and Reserves Travel Guide

This book covers six areas in the state of Florida - the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, Dry Tortugas, two preserves, and a national forest. The book is different from most guides, as the writing is very close to bullet points. While different, it is very helpful with information.  The guide covers how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and sample itineraries.

Exploring Everglades National Park

This is a really good book for people who engage in a variety of activities. This book covers hiking, biking, and paddling. Unlike many national parks, the Everglades probably has more paddling trails than hiking trails.  This is a good reference for both.  Good information on what paddling trails to avoid when it is windy and what time of year to see certian wildlife.

The Everglades River of Grass

Written by Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a pioneering environmentalist for the Everglades. Written in the same year as the park was established, this book begins with about 50 pages on the ecology of the Everglades.  After this introduction, the book cover the history of the Everglades over the remaiing 300 pages.  Definitely a classic of park literature.

Hot Springs National Park

Book Cover Images of America Hot Springs National Park

Images of America: Hot Springs National Park

Established 40 years before Yellowstone, Hot Springs is the oldest federal property in the Park System. This book, through photographs, tracks the history of the park. Various bathhouses have come and gone over the decades. Many old buildings that are no longer with us are shown, along with the various facilities within them, to help rejuvenate patrons. In a tribute to modern safety standards, it is amazing how many of these old buildings burned down over the years.
