Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana is a million-acre wilderness of rugged peaks, active glaciers, and more than 700 lakes along the Continental Divide, forming the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park with Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park. Established in 1910, it protects dramatic alpine and subalpine ecosystems, supports abundant wildlife, including mountain goats and grizzly bears, and features iconic routes such as the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which provides access to its glacial valleys and high mountain passes.

The Glacier Conservancy helps support the park.

Hiking Guides and Maps

Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park

After a short twenty-page introduction to hiking in the area, this book covers seventy trails around the two parks.  The hikes range from short trips of a mile to longer backpacking trips of 40 miles or so.  The average hiki in this book leans towards longer hikes than in many hiking guides with numerous being optional backpacking trips, not day hikes.

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map

This map covers both parks  - Glacier on the United States side and Waterton on the Canadian side. A really good map for general navigation around the area and for navigating shorter trails; however, for true backcountry travel, you would want USGS quad maps.

Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks

Forty-seven hikes are listed in Glacier National Park. An additional twelve hikes are described for Waterton Lakes across the border in Canada.  After twenty-plus pages of introduction to the park, its geology and history, the book describes each hike in a moderate degree of detail.  The hike range vary in difficulty and vary in distance from short hikes of less than two miles to longer backpack treks of 30 miles or more.  Great photography accompanies many of the descriptions.
