Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park in northwestern Arizona protects a 277-mile-long, mile-deep gorge carved by the Colorado River, widely regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Encompassing over 1.2 million acres on the Colorado Plateau, the park showcases nearly 2 billion years of exposed rock layers, transitioning from forested high plateaus along the rims to stark desert basins at lower elevations. It lies on the ancestral homelands of numerous Indigenous tribes and preserves thousands of archaeological sites, highlighting more than 12,000 years of human history and ongoing cultural connections. Established as a national park in 1919, the Grand Canyon now draws millions of visitors each year for its panoramic viewpoints, extensive trail system perfect for hiking in the Grand Canyon, river rafting, and opportunities to experience its unique geology, ecology, and dark night skies. For those interested in exploring further, there are several Grand Canyon books and national park guides available to enhance your visit. The Grand Canyon Conservancy helps support the preservation of the park.
